BARNTON will start their debut season in semi-professional football with a former England C international in charge.

Andy Burgess, who made close to 300 appearances for Rushden & Diamonds over two spells, has been named manager at Townfield Lane ahead of the Villagers’ first campaign in the North West Counties League.

The former Oxford, Luton and Mansfield midfielder takes over from Ian Ross, who will concentrate on his role as chairman of the club’s committee.

“This is the start of an exciting new era at Barnton,” said Burgess, now 32.

“From the outset, I’ve been impressed with the ambition and vision of the chairman, and I’m honoured to have been offered the position.

“Although I’ve not managed before, I have gained vast experience throughout my playing and coaching career.

“The hard work starts now and my focus is on progressing the club through this period.”

Barnton, founder members of the Cheshire League back in the 1940s, step up a level for the first time in their history.

And Ross is confident he has chosen the right man to help them adapt to new surroundings.

He said: “Andy is starting out in the management game.

“But here at Barnton he will be given every opportunity to express himself and mould the team according to his own style and ethics.

“I’m sure all of the lads at the club are as excited as me by his arrival and I’m positive Andy and his team will add new dimensions to all of their games.

“He was the outstanding candidate and we are delighted to have him on board.”
