1874 NORTHWICH moved into a promotion position after winning their final league match of the season last night.
Ian Street’s men celebrated a record victory in a 6-0 thrashing of Holker Old Boys at Barton Stadium, swapping places with Formby in the table.
Their rivals now must score maximum points in their remaining game to deny the North West Counties League newcomers a place in the Premier Division next season.
Sakeel Abdullah and Mike Brandon scored doubles against the Cumbrian outfit as the hosts kept a fifth successive clean sheet in Division One.
Brandon ends the campaign with 37 goals.
Rick Bailey and Matty Ward were also on target as 1874 Northwich completed a double against Holker, who had lost by a single goal to Formby on Bank Holiday Monday.
They move three points clear of the Squirrels as a result, though the Merseysiders have a superior goal difference.
If they beat Atherton Collieries on Saturday, then they will finish as runners-up to champions Nelson.
1874’s points tally, 84, is big enough to have been promoted in each of the past 15 seasons.
Skelmersdale United, with 85, were the last team to move up a level with a higher total in 1998.
However they played four more matches that season.
