CASTLE Private reached the semi finals of the British Crown Green Bowling Association’s World Club Championship at Irlam on Sunday.

The Northwich outfit, reigning Mid-Cheshire Bowling Association champions, bowed out at the last four stage by 11 chalks to south Yorkshire’s Meersbrook.

Rob Winnington, Stephen Morrey and Matt Hamman were their winners in a 153-142 defeat.

Earlier, Castle had recovered from losing the first two head-to-heads of their quarter final encounter with Greville Arms, representing Warwick and Worcester.

Morrey and Hamman, along with Jason Cornes, Mark Winnington and Kevin Duncalf, made sure they won the next five though in a comfortable 161-122 success.

It marks their team’s best performance in the competition after a last eight exit a year ago.
