A CLUB on the rise and an emerging tae kwon-do talent were among the winners at the fifth annual Cheshire West and Chester Sports Awards.

Hartford-based Cheshire Gymnastics and Winsford’s Emily Oakes caught the judge’s eye and will go on to represent the borough in the Cheshire and Warrington awards at Knutsford later this year.

British Paralympic cyclist Mark Colbourne MBE presented to Laura Hudson the prize for Club of the Year as a reward for swelling a predominantly junior membership at Cheshire Gymnastics to more than 200.

Decision-makers were impressed with the club hosting classes in Winsford, Holmes Chapel and Knutsford, as well as having a link to schools via Vale Royal School Sport Partnership.

Oakes’ success came in the Junior Sports Achiever category.

The 13-year-old, a student at the Blue Dragon Club, represented Great Britain at last year’s International Taekwondo Federation European Championships in Barcelona, winning three gold medals.

Alpine skier Cameron Andrew McGregor-Ogden from Hartford was among the nominees.

Basketball trainer Tom Shubrook, from Northwich, also gained recognition as a nominee in the Coach of the Year category.

Hartford Church of England High School pupil David Corris was a nominee for the Young Volunteer of the Year Award.

Kingsmead Primary School and Charles Darwin Community Primary School were contenders for the Primary of the Year Award, as were Hartford and St Nicholas Catholic High School in the secondary section.
