WINSFORD Swimming Club are home to half a dozen of the county’s best juniors following success at the Cheshire Championships.

Six different youngsters won individual gold medals at Macclesfield, including 11 for 10-year-old Jay Cushen.

Unsurprisingly, that haul earned him Top Boy status in his age group.

Cushen was faster than his rivals over 50m in four disciplines; backstroke, breaststroke, individual medley (IM) and freestyle.

He repeated the trick over 200m, this time including butterfly, adding victories in the 400m freestyle and 100m IM too.

Oliver Rose claimed two titles in the under 16s boys’ class, in breaststroke and IM over 200m, finishing as runner-up too over 50m and 100m for the former.

His times were also fast enough to win medals in both the junior and open categories.

Also representing Winsford, 13-year-old Alisha Hawkins was less than a second from a time over 800m that would have secured entry for this year’s national championships.

She was third in class for the discipline.

Cameron Jones won the under 15s boys’ 100m backstroke, while there were gold medals for Adam Blackshaw in the under 13s boys’ 200m butterfly and debutant Harrison Aspinall, aged nine, in the 200m breaststroke.

He was second in the Top Boy standings for his age category too.

Abbey Brown, Eleanor O’Grady, Isobella Burton, Olivia Capper, Jordan Gaskell, Jamie Young, Lydia Rose, Rebecca Alderman, Kyle Hawkins and Brandon Sharkey returned home with silver or bronze medals for Winsford.

In the relays, Winsford won silver medals in four categories and bronze in two others.

“We sent our biggest team to date and they did not disappoint,” said head coach Dave Pettengell.

“They were rewarded with an impressive amount of medals too, which means we had eight swimmers in the top six of the Top Boy or Girl ratings.”
