A GREAT Britain international has taken to cross-country skiing in order to be fit for next month’s Sprint Duathlon European Championships.

Charlotte Baker, living in Sweden after accepting a job in Gothenburg late last year, has adapted her preparation to stay sharp during the Scandinavian winter.

It has brought with it mixed results.

“It was hard to find motivation when there wasn’t much daylight,” said the former St Nicholas RC High School pupil.

“The icy conditions made cycling impossible.

“I tried cross-country skiing instead; it gives you a really good workout and uses similar muscles to those you need when cycling.

“However, a couple of weeks ago I fell while I was skiing and fractured my wrist so am currently in plaster.

“I am trying not to let it affect me too much; I cycle to work every day and run during my lunch break.”

Baker qualified for the European event, which takes place in Holland, as a reward for victory at the Oulton Park Duathlon in October.

She will represent Great Britain in the women’s 25-29 age group at Horst.

Originally from Stanthorne near Middlewich, Baker is no stranger to international competition after competing at the ITU Age-Group World Championships in London last September.

She was fourth Briton to finish in her category.

“My aim is to race hard and enjoy the atmosphere,” she said.

“I will definitely be entering more races once winter is over and the Swedes come out of hibernation.

“I’m looking forward to being able to swim in the lakes nearby.

“I’ve joined a cycling club here, Hisingens Cykelklubb, and will be going on a training camp with them soon if my wrist is strong enough.”
