WITTON Albion supporters will attempt this weekend to break a record set two years ago by World Cup-winning goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Succeed or fail, they also plan to make a charity donation at the same time.

Organiser Mark Robinson has challenged fellow fans to attempt to beat a benchmark set by Real Madrid’s number one for the most goals punted into the net from a pitch’s halfway line during 60 seconds.

The Spain shot-stopper managed 11 when he tried in Beijing, China, back in July 2011.

“We wanted to do something we could tailor to a charity event,” said Robinson.

“The club has been working hard to interact better with the community around it, so this seemed like a logical progression and something we hope generates a bit of interest.

“Attempting to break a world record wasn’t a determining factor, rather it was something we spotted when having a look at the Guinness World Records website.

“This seemed like something we could have fun with.”

The challenge, set for tomorrow, Saturday, when Witton host Whitby Town in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, is open to anybody.

Robinson has four Albion fans signed up already.

Each person pays £5 to take part, committing also to raising a minimum of £30 in sponsorship for this year’s Sports Relief.

The club is offering a signed shirt as an incentive to better Casillas’ attempt.

Barclays have agreed to match the sum raised for charity to double the final total.

The challenge coincides with the latest edition of the club’s popular Families for a Fiver offer.

Up to two adults, accompanied by an unlimited number of children under the age of 15, can watch the hosts’ Premier Division encounter, which kicks off at 3pm.

Witton’s under 11s, confirmed last month as champions in the Mid Cheshire Youth League’s Division Two after avoiding defeat in 11 matches, will be guests of the club for the afternoon.
