ROWERS from clubs in Northwich are in line to represent the region after setting the fastest times during a trial.

Northwich Rowing Club crews were in fine form, recording four victories on a stretch of the River Weaver in Runcorn.

They hope to be rewarded with a place in the North West team for next month’s Junior Inter-Regional Regatta at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham.

George Lawton, among the quickest in class during a GB Rowing assessment for juniors last week, celebrated victory in an MJ16 single scull.

He then joined forces with Harry Taylor, from Trentham Rowing Club, to win in an MJ16 double after completing the course in 5:35.46 – 10 seconds ahead of their closest rivals.

Lawrence Williams stroked a Northwich MJ15 coxed four to first place in 5:37.48 with Greg Murphy, Rhys Coffey, Matthew Radford and cox Tom Swithenbank in the boat along with him.

A fourth category success for Northwich followed when Hannah Cooney and Amelia Berry, in a WJ15 double, saw off the challenge of a crew from Trentham to top the timesheet.

Grange School Rowing Club were victors in an MJ16 quad, consisting of stroke James Darbyshire, Callum Begg, Matt Strickland-Baker and Ben Holt, that timed 5:22.32.

A Northwich boat was runner-up, less than a second adrift of the eventual winners.

Selectors will shortly name the North West squad for an annual event that includes entries from British Rowing’s 10 regions.
