Winnington Park 33 Douglas 5

WINNINGTON were clinical when disposing of promotion hopefuls Douglas, recording only a second league win since the middle of October.

They ran in five tries along the way, meaning the Isle of Man outfit have lost on both of their visits to Northwich this term.

Park broke through when Fraser Lindsay applied the finishing flourish to a fine backs-led move, converted by fit-again Sam Brookes.

Douglas replied instantly, Daryn Thompson crossing the line following a successful rolling maul.

They assumed control afterwards, keeping possession for longer than the home team who defended their try-line resolutely.

Winnington were next to score though, Mike Jones touching down after an attack of multiple phases with Brookes again accurate when adding the extras.

But they could not capitalise when the visitors were reduced to 14 men after Ryan Maddocks was sent to the sin bin, leading 14-5 at the interval.

Douglas dominated the opening exchanges of the second period, camping inside Park’s 22, though they could not turn their territorial advantage into points.

Instead replacement Chris Heptinstall showed glimpses of his former self when finishing a slick passing move with a flash of acceleration.

Brookes’ conversion extended Park’s lead.

Their victory was secure when Craig Lamb chased his own interception kick, only to be pipped at the line by Danny Williams who claimed the first try of a brace.

Lindsay had a try chalked off, though Williams doubled his personal tally shortly afterwards out wide. Brookes’ fourth conversion of the afternoon completed the scoring.
