Match pointers
1874 NORTHWICH return tomorrow to the ground at which they collected a first trophy back in the summer.

In July, they defeated fellow fans-run club AFC Rushden & Diamonds at Widnes’ Select Security Stadium to become the third team to win the Supporters Direct Shield.

This time Vikings, sent packing by Ian Street’s men in the Division One Challenge Cup last month, provide the opposition.

Front man Matthew Ward is unavailable again as he is on holiday, but defender Danny Thomas is available after returning from a trip to Cuba.

Steve Crane, plus new recruits Steve Murphy and Matthew Woolley, will battle for a starting place in midfield for the visitors.

Northwich have lost two of their past three league matches on the road, but can still boast one of the section’s best away records – only Formby have picked up more points on their travels.

Victory on Saturday will propel them back to second spot in the table behind title favourites Nelson, winners at Holker Old Boys on Boxing Day.

Widnes, on the receiving end of a 5-0 defeat in a first competitive match against their fellow league newcomers, have won only one of their past four matches at home.
