Winnington Park pick up bonus point after scoring four tries in defeat against West Park

WINNINGTON’S players were summoned for tackling practice after their latest defeat as hosts West Park recorded back-to-back league wins for the first time since September.

Skipper Harry Stubbs saw plenty to be positive about too on the pitch at Red Rocks, where the Northwich outfit touched down four times to pick up a bonus point.

“We’re rebuilding, but showed signs of what we’re capable of,” he said afterwards.

“It’s disappointing to that missed tackles led to four of their tries though, so we’ll get to work on that in training.”

Full back Matt Savage crossed in the corner inside the opening five minutes for the first of his hat-trick of scores for West Park, though Winnington replied instantly.

Stubbs fed Mike Jones, revelling in a new role at scrum half, and he outwitted the defence to score. Sam Brookes converted.

Captain Rob Morley took a quick tap penalty, swerving away from a would-be tackler to put the home team ahead again at 10-7.

Undeterred, Winnington wrestled back the initiative.

Stubbs was stopped short of the whitewash, but Jones picked up the ball and darted through a gap to touch down his second try. Returning Brookes again added the extras.

Winger Chris Fortune gathered his own kick to score at the other end, then flanker Karl Miller scooped up the ball from the base of a scrum to scythe through Park’s defence for a further score.

Warren Hunt converted.

The ebb and flow nature of the contest continued, and Park’s refusal to relent was rewarded with a try for Joe Robbins.

Winnington lost the contest in the opening exchanges of the second half when they conceded tries in quick succession, Savage crossing for his second with Hunt kicking the extras.

He reached a personal treble soon afterwards.

Further scores from Liam Hill and Hunt put made safe maximum points.

Park’s persistence paid when strong running and fast hands sent Robbins sprinting through a gap to the line for his second try, Winnington’s fourth of the afternoon.
