POOL: Nectar's savour cup win against Gladstone
GLADSTONE C’s exit from the Northwich and District League’s Team Knockout was the biggest surprise of Wednesday’s preliminary round matches.
The Division One newcomers, two points adrift of the summit in the standings, went down 4-3 at lower-ranked underdogs Nectar’s.
Barn Owl B, hoping for a change in fortune after starting the new season with five successive defeats, suffered further misery when they let slip a three-frame lead when losing at Division Three promotion hopefuls Blue Barrel the same evening.
In ties played between teams from the top tier, Gladstone A won at Barn Owl C while Green Dragon A edged their head-to-head with Bowling Green A.
Owley Wood A, victors in 2008, eased through at the expense of Greenbank B.
Elsewhere The Elms avoided any embarrassment in an easy victory at Beech Tree B, while Gladstone B ceded a single frame to Beech Tree A.
Rudheath, winners on eight previous occasions, made it through at the expense of Division Two team Slow & Easy.
Holders Castle Private, victors last season with a different line-up, fell at the first hurdle after losing by the odd frame at Barn Owl D.
Both Hartford teams reserved a first round place after slender victories, both by 4-3, against Wheatsheaf and Witton Chimes respectively.
It means Hartford B will not defend the Supplementary Shield title they won last term.
There were wins too for Chapels, Green Dragon B, Owley Wood B, Owley Wood C and The Lion, while Iron Bridge had a bye.
The draw for the last 16, scheduled for next month, takes place at the captains’ meeting on Sunday week, November 3.
