CYCLING: Record turnout for Weaver Valley
A RECORD number of Weaver Valley Cycling Club members entered Sunday’s annual Cat and Fiddle Hill Climb, during which four new course bests were set.
Andy Newby, timing 21:37.6, was the first rider in the club’s gold and blue to reach the finish, placing him just outside the top 20.
He was followed by Sir John Deane’s College student James Risk, representing Sportcity Velo, who clocked 21:43.3 to make his the runner-up prize for juniors.
Dave Fearon, in 22:59.2, was quickest Weaver Valley veteran among the men while newcomer Penny Thorn was first senior woman in 26:27.3. Carol Robson, with 27:20.4, was fastest veteran woman.
Tejvan Pettinger (Sri Chinmoy Cycling Team) successfully defended a title he won last year, setting a new course record by reaching the finish in 18:16.8 – 14 seconds faster than the previous best.
Peter Greenwood (Clayton Velo) set a new marker in the men’s over 60s age class, a feat matched by Joanne Blakeley (Champion System Maxgear) in the ladies’ race.
Buxton Cycling Club’s three-man team clocked a combined time – 59:39.2 – that accounted for the fourth new record of the day.
