WEAVER Valley Cycling Club played host as Paul Bethell emerged victorious in the fifth round of the North Western Cyclo-Cross League at Greenbank on Sunday.

Runner-up at the previous meeting a week earlier, the 40-year-old Team Elite veteran led a 105-strong field from the start before being joined at the front by teammate Giles Drake.

The pair stayed clear for the remainder of the race, Bethall edging a sprint to the line before Pete Middleton (Zepnat) reached the finish in third position.

Husband and wife Kevan and Eleanor Underhill celebrated a double success as fastest Weaver Valley club members to complete the course, a feat that earned them first prize in the men’s and women’s categories for over 50s respectively.

There were awards too in the youth, U12s and U10s classes while Robert Rogers, of Birkenhead North End CC, won the gong for quickest junior.
