ENERGETIC staff at a fast food restaurant will be getting on their bikes and supporting national cycle to work day next week.

Four co-workers at McDonalds use pedal power to get to the branch on High Street in Northwich every day with others cycling several times a week.

One of the managers Sarah Leigh will be buying a bike this weekend so she can join the thousands of participants next Thursday as they cycle to work as part of a national campaign.

Sarah said: "Our members of staff regularly cycle to work from around the Northwich area.

"It's easier for them to cycle as there aren't any convenient buses for them and it's much healthier than driving to work.

"We have a bike stand inside for bicycles to be stored during the winter and we are intending to do more to encourage colleagues to cycle and make it easier for them.

"My sister bought me a voucher for a well known bike shop for my birthday so I can buy a new bike and national cycle to work day is a good incentive to go shopping for one this weekend."

This year's event is headed by Paralympic gold medallist Dame Sarah Storey and organisers are hoping that people across the country will pledge to cycle one million miles collectively during the day.

It is hoped that the campaign will highlight the benefits of cycling as a means of transport and encourage more people to cycle more often.

• The Guardian, in conjunction with British Cycling, is encouraging readers to share their stories of Cycle to Work day for a feature to inspire others. We want to know how many miles you commute on the day, where you work, how much money it saved you, why you decided to give it a go and whether you will ever do it again. And if you can send us a picture of yourself when you arrive at work that’s even better. Riders who send us their stories will receive an official Team GB water bottle courtesy of British Cycling.
