HUNDREDS of cyclists jumped into the saddle for a day in the sunshine at Cheshire’s famous racing circuit on Sunday.

From a four-year-old who has just mastered the art of riding his bike without stabilisers to a 90-year-old who cycles every week, a whole range of cyclists enjoyed the Get On Your Bike day at Oulton Park.

Organiser Tony Rickels, from Vale Royal Lions, said: “Loads of people came on the day because the weather was good and everyone I’ve spoken to has come off the circuit and said how much they’ve enjoyed it and how lovely it was to cycle around.

“I’ve not heard a single bad word, everything’s gone so well.

“I want to say thank you to everyone for their support.”

The event drew around 400 people, with serious lycra-clad cyclists zipping round Oulton Park during a speed demons session in the early morning before the track was opened to families, individuals, teams and even the odd cyclist in fancy dress.

Get On Your Bike was organised by Vale Royal Lions, St Luke’s Hospice, the Neuromuscular Centre (NMC), the North West Air Ambulance and the League of Friends for Tarporley War Memorial Hospital, in conjunction with the Northwich Guardian’s Pedal Power campaign.

Stan Randall, activities chairman for Vale Royal Lions, said: “There’s been a terrific atmosphere – everyone said it was fabulous.”

Emily Swinerd, from NMC, said: “There’s been a nice variety of people and we think that with it being Fathers’ Day it’s worked in our favour.

“One guy even came round for the speed demons session, had lunch with his family and then brought them all back this afternoon.”

Fundraisers now have until the end of August to return their sponsor money.
