SOUNDS of hammering and hard work filled the air in Marbury on Saturday as children and adults got to work building nest boxes.

Friends of Anderton and Marbury (FoAM) organised the event to celebrate National Nest Box Week and give people a chance to build a box for their gardens.

Volunteers were on hand to advise bird lovers on the best places to put their nest boxes and what kind of residents they could expect.

Alan Garner, FoAM chairman, said: "It gives people, especially the children, such a sense of pride in feeling they've made something themselves or played a part in it - when you see the smiles on their faces when they finish it's lovely."

The volunteers had nest box kits ready cut for people to put together and more than 30 were used during Saturday's event.

The timber they used is from one of Marbury's trees, which was blown down in gales last year.
