NORTHWICH PROBUS CLUB by William Harris

Neil Smith spoke to members at their recent meeting on September 7 about his experiences ‘Behind the Iron Curtain’.

Members might have been expecting a story of spying and espionage when Neil started by showing a bug detecting device that he had used in his trips to the then Soviet Union in the 1980s, but this was quickly dispelled when he explained that he had been there as a musician. He explained some of the violent history of the area, from the Vikings to the overthrow of the Czars. He also illustrated his talk with several musical items on a Spanish guitar, explaining that he had been invited to musical festivals to show the contrast between the classical Spanish guitar and the twelve-string Russian guitar and the balalaika.

Members are looking forward to a walk from the Antrobus Arms, using Boyd's Walk.

The bowling section reported winning matches against Tarporley and Weaver Probus Clubs. The final outdoor match of the season will be against Weaver Probus Club and the indoor season starts on September 29.

Details were announced for the trip on the Manchester Ship Canal on October 1.
