ESU by Kate Stuart

The first luncheon meeting of the 2015/16 season was held at Portal Premier Golf Club. The meeting began with the AGM with Jennifer MacPherson elected as acting chairman.

There was a wonderful talk by Christina Spencer entitled 'Life on the other side'. It began with Christina, at age three in Leipzig in 1943 during the second world war and charted her life through hardship and courage until she met her English husband at Liverpool University 18 years later. Her mother disappeared when out shopping and her father a few months later was imprisoned by the Nazis. She was taken to an orphanage and sent to work on a farm. She was always hungry as 80 per cent of the food was sent to the army. At the end of the war she became displaced and was eventually found by her parents who had, by a miracle survived in 1949. She moved to England in 1959 and worked for German Foreign Office, she was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal of the German Order of Merit for services to Anglo-German Friendship.

The next meeting is on October 13 at Portal Premier Golf Club with guest speaker Dr John Perkins and his talk entitled 'Desert Island Discs with Mozart'. New members and visitors welcome. For further information, please call 01606 215908.
