HARTFORD WI by Sally White

The September meeting at Hartford WI commenced with president, Pam Lamb, thanking everyone for their support and help at the summer fair fundraising event. Members enjoyed afternoon tea with specially made cupcakes by Karen Jones. There were a variety of stalls, tombola and a raffle and it proved to be a very successful afternoon.

Guest speaker for the meeting was Dr Kenneth Lea, he introduced and played Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer, the title of his talk for the evening. Kenneth entertained members with piano pieces, song and verse. He reminded them that many quotes used today are from Shakespeare for example ‘seen better days' and 'not budge an inch’. His musical quiz of ‘old’ signature tunes were particularly enjoyed and bought back memories of days gone by.

Lorraine Garner read her entry for this year’s Literacy competition covering the last 100 years. A vote was taken with regard to the collection of used stamps and it was agreed that they will continue to support the Leprosy mission.

There is a WI centenary celebration afternoon tea at Winnington Park Recreation Club on September 16 from 2pm to 4pm. The next meeting will be on October 7 with guest speaker Mac Carding on the History of the River Weaver. Visitors are welcome, contact 01606 75520 for information.
