ON A bright sunny morning, 39 set out on the journey up to the Lake District, crossing their fingers that the weather would hold for us – which it did. The A group led by Ian Hilditch tackled the high level route around the Fairfield Horseshoe, climbing past Rydal Hall hen up Nab Scar to Heron Pike, then on to the high point at Fairfield top (2863ft).

Then heading over Hart Crag and Dove Crag they descended back to Ambleside having covered around 3,500ft and 13 miles.

The B walk led by Grahame Reid tackled a 10- mile clockwise walk, with a tough climb up to Wansfell Pike then downhill to Troutbeck and out to Ing Bridge before heading back to Ambleside enjoying superb views down to Windermere in the sunshine having climbed a total of 1,950ft.

The C walk led by David Brunt undertook a scenic nine-mile walk to the north of Windermere, via Rothay Park Rydal, and along the "coffin" route south of Grasmere Lake.

On to Loughrigg Tarn and along an undulating route back to Ambleside.

The D walkers led by Judith Cross took a seven-mile route up through Rothay Park, along the lower edge of Loughrigg Fell and on to Loughrigg Terrace and views over Grasmere.

They walked back to Ambleside via Rydal Water and Rydal Hall having climbed 1,000 feet.

All enjoyed superb Lake District views throughout the day, returning home tired but happy having enjoyed refreshments in Ambleside. Thanks to all the leaders and coach organisers for making it happen.
