HARTFORD WI by Sally White

The August meeting of Hartford WI was well attended. After the business was concluded, Pam Lamb thanked and presented flowers to Mary Atkins and Sandra German for their help each week, Mary for setting up the kitchen and Sandra for organising the book swap.

The speaker for the evening was Sue DeBarro on her ‘Quilting Journey’. Sue originally started out as a teacher of theatre and dance, running her own drama school, when her husband’s job took him and the family to the USA. When she was living in Wisconsin she was introduced to quilting by her neighbour and her great love for the craft took off.

She attended various workshops and courses learning about the different techniques and traditions. She eventually moved back to the UK where she was asked to teach quilting to American women living in London. Although Sue has moved many times, her love of quilting and embroidery has never diminished and she showed members a variety of beautifully hand and machine made quilts, all of which had special meanings and were completed at different times in her life. She made a dinosaur one for her grandson and one to celebrate her 25th wedding anniversary. The colours of the fabrics and workmanship were quite exquisite and she encouraged members to have a go at this lovely craft.

Diary date: August 22, Summer Fayre, Hartford Methodist Church 2-4pm.

The next meeting is on Wednesday, September 02 with guest speaker Dr Kenneth Lea and his talk entitled The Entertainer. Visitors are very welcome, please contact 01606 75520 for information.
