MEMBERS of Northwich Probus club recently enjoyed a very amusing talk by Mr Bob King on the subject of humour of the Music Hall.

Bob told members that The Canterbury Arms, Lambeth was the first music hall established in 1852 by Charles Morton on the site of a former skittle alley adjacent to the Canterbury Tavern in Lambeth.

It was the first purpose-built music hall in London. Morton came to be dubbed the Father of the Halls as hundreds of imitators were built within the next several years. Bob talked about a number of famous names in music hall, including George Robey, Nellie Wallace, George Formby and Harry Lauder.

He sang songs and told jokes of the music halls.

Members are looking forward a visit to the Railway Heritage Centre at Crewe, a walk in Whatcroft and a meal at Manor Farm.

There is also a programme of bowls matches against other Probus Clubs.

Meetings are held on alternate Monday mornings at Hartford Golf Club.
