Weaverham and District Gardening Club by Heather Rawling

At this month’s meeting, members enjoyed their first visit of the year to a NGS garden in Aston by Budworth, next door to Curbishley’s Roses.

The garden itself, formerly a working farm, has been lovingly created by the present owners over the last thirty five years. The garden is divided into several separate ‘rooms’ which include a rose garden, a lawned area with borders, a pond garden and a vegetable plot. There is also a box parterre at the front of the cottage. It’s a wonderful garden to explore as there are lots of nooks and crannies. The main attractions in May are the azaleas and rhododendrons which were in full flower and were a beautiful sight.

Mr and Mrs Evans were very welcoming hosts, naming plant varieties and able to describe the development of the garden from pig sties and paddocks to the beautiful cottage garden it is today. There are still pigs in the gardens but now they are very quiet and well behaved.

The visit ended with tea and cakes in the lovely old cottage where Mrs Evans also spoke about the house’s history.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 30 at the University Academy Primary School, Northwich Road, Weaverham. 7.30 pm start and there will be a talk given by Tom Acton. For further information phone 852671 or visit the website: weaverhamgardeners.btck.co.uk
