THE December meeting of the English Speaking Union was held at Portal Premier Golf Club. Members gathered to hear a talk given by Dr Helen Newall on “A reflection of Commemoration”.
Dr Newall, a writer, director and Reader of Performing Arts at Edge Hill University, gave a very interesting and thought-provoking lecture especially in this year of the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
She felt the poppy installation at the Tower of London gave an amazing impact and she urged everyone to save their records and photographs of the event, remarking quoting “Flowers say the unsayable”.
The next meeting is on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, and the talk subject is “James Gillray, Political Caricaturist of 18th Century” by Philip Holroyd.
