IT HAS been a busy two weeks as Christmas approaches and there will be no let up as Santa Claus comes to town.

Members of the Rotary Club of Northwich and the Rotary Club of Northwich Vale Royal held a collection for the Ebola crisis in West Africa at Tesco in Northwich and £674.70 was donated which is being distributed via the Disaster Emergency Committee.

In November, the club’s in-house golf society held its presentation evening for the year.

The winner for 2014 was Kevin Sheehan with golf events organiser Peter Chapman second, and last year’s winner Richard Dobson, third.

The golf society is looking for new members and you do not need to be a Rotarian to play.

After the presentations, Rotarian Ian Lewis gave a talk about the largest explosion of the Second World War in which his great uncle Tom Sanders was killed.

The explosion happened at Fauld in Staffordshire on November 27, 1944 and killed 70 people.

Fauld had a gypsum works underground and most of it was being used to store ammunition for the RAF.

More than 3,760 tonnes of explosives blew up.

Exact details of how the explosion occurred are unknown but although the sound was heard over 11 miles away, it has been kept very quiet since.

Sadly it was Ian’s uncle, also called Ian Lewis, who was supposed to give the talk but sadly he died recently so the presentation was given by his nephew.
