Sue Church was the speaker for the November meeting of Winsford History Society, with her talk about the Old Burial Ground of St Peter, Leighton.

With her usual attention to detail and scholarly research, Sue described how a chance remark led to the discovery of the old church of St Peter. Unknown to many locals, the site of the long gone church was on land donated by James France of Bostock Hall. It lay on the border of the parish of Nantwich and Middlewich, close to Leighton Hospital and was built to satisfy the religious needs of 234 residents of the area.

Grand plans were laid including the appointment of a beadle, pew opener, warden and a licensed vicar. Built in 1841, the church could not have been a substantial construction because it was replaced by another church at Bradfield Green in 1851. The only remains are three graves belonging to Hollinshead, Vernon and Bunce.

The next meeting is on December 1, when Ian Tabernacle will be looking at artefacts from old Winsford. As this is the Christmas meeting, hot punch and mince pies will be available.
