WE went on a journey, not a physical journey, but a virtual one, going back in time and travelling from Northwich to Dutton along the River Weaver.

We were led by Colin Edmondson, a local historian. The River Weaver is totally in Cheshire starting in the Peckforton Hills, and “weaving” its way through the county.

Historically, the chemical industry boomed, due to this river and underground salt resources, as did world-first highly innovated engineering feats.

We looked with horror at photos of old collapsed buildings and land subsidence’s in the Northwich area, then marvelled at how land had been reclaimed and utilised, giving us the developing Northwich we know today.

Believe it or not, the last battle of the English Civil War took place at Winnington Bridge in 1659.

So from looking back, looking forward. Whitley WI have a “full house” for their autumn Bingo and Hot-Pot supper Halloween-style, social event.

Bookings are being taken for our Christmas Party, and an “Icing Modelling” course will take place in November.

We continue with our enjoyable monthly rambles and book club. Our dedicated darts team have started their pursuit of local and county trophies.

November brings our annual meeting, where the president and committee for 2015 are agreed. We also have a talk from United Utilities, entitled “Water: Our most precious resource”.

The WI is all about educating women and you are never too old to learn.

Why not come and join us when we meet at 7.30pm in Whitley Village Hall on the first Thursday of the month.

You will be welcomed, as are all visitors and new members. Email patsysharpy@hotmail.com for further details.
