WHITLEY WI have been out and about with a variety of activities recently. One visit was rubbish, literally. They were warmly greeted by the education officer and dressed in fashionable lime green hi-vis jackets at the Re-Cycle First Education Centre for Cheshire West and Chester Council, based near Winsford.

The use of coloured bins was reinforced and a model of the collection vehicle demonstrated and explained. One improvement that everyone can make is to collect all food waste, as it is turned into bio-gas which, in turn, is burned to produce electricity. Putting things in the bin will never be the same again for some members.

A visit to Adlington Hall near Macclesfield on a beautiful summer’s evening was thoroughly enjoyed. The Hall has been home to the Legh family for over 700 years. Female members kept their maiden name on marriage to ensure the continuation of the family name. The original black and white building has been lovingly restored.

The Great Hall is unique and houses one of Britain’s finest organs, known to have been played by Handel. The gardens are bursting with colour, and members got happily “lost” in the maze. The lovely evening ended with a delicious meal.

Members are planning to display the bunting they have made for the WI centenary next year at the Village Show in September. They are also running a trading table/bring and buy stall and would appreciate items to sell.

Meetings are at 7.30pm in Whitley Village Hall on the first Thursday of the month. Visitors and new members welcome. Further details from patsysharpy@hotmail.com
