PRESIDENT Ruth Cairns gave a warm welcome to Helen Carey, WI adviser, members and visitors to the July meeting of Bostock and District WI.

Ruth read out the diary events, which include: a coffee morning at Viva on August 12, meeting at 10.30am and the traditional garden meeting on August 26, which is a coach trip to Shrewsbury, to include a boat ride. Also planned is a proposed visit to an Alpaca farm on WI Day, September 16, organised by Margaret Webb.

The walking group will meet as usual at The Bull’s Head, at 1.30pm, on September 10.

Harry Watson and his wife were joint speakers for the meeting with their talk, ‘The Trials of a Driving Instructor’.

Harry was a police driver for some years, as well as an advanced driving instructor.

He and his wife loved their jobs. If anyone showed a determination to learn to drive, then they were equally determined for their pupils to realise their dream.

One of the phrases that came up often was “My dad said you don’t do it like that!” Mrs Watson said one of her pupils is still in touch after 30 years.

They have had many success stories, helped in part by their sympathetic, patient and caring approach to teaching someone to drive.

Helen Robinson gave the vote of thanks.

The next meeting is on September 30 with speaker Bernice Walmsley talking about ‘Getting Published and British Citizenship’.

New members and visitors are most welcome.
