AT the July meeting of Whitegate WI a party was held to celebrate its founding of 60 years ago. Members and invited guests from Group and County level enjoyed a lovely social evening with a buffet provided by the committee.

Founding member Nancy Carter gave a short speech about how the WI started with its first 57 members in September 1954. Activities then included a choir, country dancing, a drama group and badminton.

She then cut the celebration cake depicting current activities, which had been made by Margaret Baldini.

Members had been given a “highly commended” for their Cheshire Show entry, and had recreated it for all to admire. Photo albums from previous years were on show, together with the trophy from the recent darts success and Village Show winners’ cups.

Today Whitegate WI is still a thriving, vibrant group of women of all ages, who enjoy the campaigning element of the WI alongside the more traditional craft activities, demonstrations and talks.

The next meeting on August 6 is another social evening, this time at the Red Lion, Little Budworth, with a meal and opportunity to try bowling!

At September’s meeting, date to be confirmed, there will be a chance to have a go at felt making.

The Village Show is on September 13, so members were encouraged to start making, baking, growing, sewing, painting and photography.

Details are available at the porch of St Mary’s Church, Whitegate, Sandiway library, Littler’s Butchers or Whitegate WI website.
