MEMBERS of Winsford Ladies Midweek Club visited Stonyford Gardens at Oakmere, near Northwich recently. They were met by Andrew Overland who gave a brief history of how his family came to own and transform the hidden valley with its spring fed lake, into the unusual and beautiful garden it is today.
The tour that followed led them through woodland, over boardwalks, where the ground was boggy, and bridges spanning the water at various points along the way, and emerging at intervals into glades where one can sit and drink in the tranquil atmosphere and surrounding vistas.
Andrew, who trained at Pershore College, and his father have planted a wide variety of unusual trees and shrubs amongst the native trees in the valley including an Handkerchief tree as well as an Indian Bean tree which can grow to 73 feet tall so it is not recommended for the average suburban garden.
The unusual and spectacular garden is a real family affair with Andrew’s wife, mum and sister all involved and was well worth the visit, after which a delicious cream tea was enjoyed in the cafe.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, July 16 at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church, Winsford. For further information please call 01606 594970 or 01606 592724.
