NORTHWICH U3A had a meeting at Barnton Memorial Hall recently and were reminded that two trips had been arranged; one to the Stoke Theatre and another to Trentham Gardens.

The speaker for the meeting was Tom Hughes who arrived in full Tudor costume, carrying with him a variety of musical instruments from that period.

His talk was entitled “Tudor Fairs and Festivities”. The festivities were connected to the seasons of the year and the church calendar. Some were related to Pagan times.

Public executions were also a cause for celebration and people were prepared to arrive several hours early to get the best view.

Music was very popular and all celebrations included singing, dancing and feasting. Although new musical instruments were developed during this period, bagpipes remained the favourite.

Tom ended his enjoyable and interesting talk by playing tunes on his instruments.

The next meeting is on June 18, with speaker Andrew Wright and his talk entitled “Travels in Africa”.
