Car club needs new members

A CLUB that started more than 15 years ago faces closure unless it can increase funding and attract more members.
Fast Track Model Car Club, based at Lostock Gralam Youth Club, used to meet once a week but due to dwindling numbers, meetings have become less frequent.
The club, which races electric radio-controlled racing cars, now meets just once a month, with club chairman Neil Goward saying its crucial it finds more members to avoid closure.
Neil, who took over the running of the club nine years ago, said: “We’ve been known to have more than 70 visitors on some occasions, and we used to have close to 20 weekly members, sometimes more.
“Members have found it harder to make the time and find the money to keep going so the clubs funds got smaller and smaller so we dropped to one race a month to try and get through the recession, hoping that the members would return – but they haven’t.
“If we could find 15 to 20 regulars that would be great. It doesn’t cost much to run and the more racers, the more fun it is!”
The club, which is part of the British Radio Car Association (BRCA), now faces imminent closure unless it can new members fast.
“We are running out of money because obviously the less people we have coming, the less money we have to keep things going.
“It’s not just our club that’s suffering, most of the clubs in the north west are, and it’s a real shame.
“It’s like most sports, the more you get involved the more you realise how many people there are out there who want to have fun and aren’t prepared to grow up.
“We just want to know if there’s anybody out there that would like to race small racing cars at 20 to 30mph indoors – before it’s too late!”
The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month, with its next meeting taking place at Lostock Gralam Youth Club on November 6 at 7pm.
