Northwich author to launch book in town centre

AN AUTHOR is launching his first book in Northwich on Saturday as he returns to his former stomping ground.

Dave Bullock will sign copies of his autobiography, The World’s Most Successful Failure, at WHSmiths, in Witton Street.

The book charts Dave’s early years growing up in Weaverham and Northwich, his near misses at fame and fortune, his sink into depression, alcoholism and violence and events that turned his life around.

The 64-year-old said: “The first part of the book gives a flavour of growing up in Weaverham and Northwich in the 1950s and 60s and the kind of things we did then that children don’t necessarily do these days.

“A lot of it is about the 60s hopes and ambitions – everyone believed they could do anything.”

Dave, who has been married to his wife Jean for 43 years, grew up in Walnut Avenue and went to Weaverham Forest Primary School.

He was taught art at Sir John Deane’s Grammar School by Robert Westall, who went on to become a children’s author, then studied at Manchester Art College before nearly breaking through in a whole host of careers, from art to film making and TV script writing.

“To sum up all my life I’ve had a lot of nearlies,” said the dad-of-two.

“That’s why I’ve called the book ‘The World’s Most Successful Failure’.

“I’ve even nearly died nine times.

“But my life turned round so the book is about hope really and about never minding the failures, there’s always a way.

“It’s a spiritual book and goes into a whole new dimension, and there’s humour in there as well.”

Dave, who lives in Bolton, will be at WHSmiths from 9am on Saturday, October 13, and hopes to catch up with old friends while he’s here.

“It’s about the book but as much as anything it’s also about meeting up with people we haven’t seen for years,” he said.
