Meeting planned to stop the cuts

A PUBLIC meeting will be held in Northwich as trade unionists and anti-cuts campaigners gear up for a protest in London.

Cheshire West Against the Cuts is holding the meeting at the memorial hall, in Chesterway, at 7.30pm on September 18.

It is focussing its campaigning in three areas, including defence of the NHS, fighting cuts to disability benefits and Cheshire West and Chester Council’s consultation on cuts to Council Tax benefit.

The group is preparing for a demonstration at Hyde Park, in London, on October 20, and there will be coach pick up points for the demonstration in Northwich and Winsford.

Ray McHale, from Cheshire West Against the Cuts and West Cheshire TUC, said: “The demonstration is to highlight the failure of Government austerity measures to solve the problems of the economy, and the TUC’s belief that the Government’s massive cuts to public spending are actually driving us deeper into recession, by squeezing spending power.

“While the rich continue to get richer, ordinary people are being pushed into poverty and financial crisis by cuts to jobs, wages and public services.

The group is also running a stall in Northwich town centre on September 15 where people can find out more.
