A CABBIE has been moved to tears by the amount of people helping him in his £10,000 fundraising challenge.
Shaun Wells, who co-owns taxi firm Club Class Travel, is planning a summer ball, a battle of the bands and a rally to Gibraltar in aid of The Christie Hospital.
The dad-of-two was diagnosed with cancer of the tonsil and given three months to live but, 12 months later, he embarked on his fundraising challenge as a thank you after treatment at the hospital.
He originally planned the rally for June but put it back to September after discovering he needed more treatment which would clash with the original date.
“The rally is going viral, it’s nuts,” he said.
“We’re going to be taking the full amount of 20 teams, with cars that look like cows and all sorts.”
But Shaun’s first fundraiser is the summer ball at Vale Royal Abbey on July 28.
The black tie event includes a three-course meal, charity auction, Abba tribute and a disco.
Prizes donated for the auction include a £10,000 business recruitment package, a gas barbecue and a signed autobiography, cookery book and apron from chef Marco Pierre White.
But to cater for more modest bank balances, Shaun, a Lostock Gralam parish councillor, has also arranged Witton Fest, a battle of the bands at Witton Albion Football Club on August 18.
“Tickets for the summer ball are £50 each and not everyone can afford that,” he said.
“Witton have said we can have the club for free, the bands are playing for free so the £5 per ticket can go straight to charity.”
Shaun will also receive a £155 donation from 11-year-old Hartford girl Elle Greenhalgh who is planning a sponsored silence for him on Sunday.
Shaun said: “I’m absolutely blown away.
“Every day something else happens and every day I’m in tears, I just can’t get over it.
“I’ve cried so much I must be dehydrated.”
