By Gina Bebbington
A HEADLESS monkey was found in Northwich on Saturday.
A member of the public made the grisly discovery while walking near Danefield Road at noon.
Police officers described the animal as a small monkey with a black and white tail.
They said its head has not been found and also said that the animal had not been microchipped.
Officers alerted the RSPCA to the incident and the charity will launch an investigation.
Insp Paul Louglan, from Northwich Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This was a bizarre and distressing find for the member of public who came across the animal.
“If, following the investigation by the RSPCA, it transpires that this is a case of an animal suffering at the hands of a person, it is a truly despicable act.”
It is not yet known where the monkey came from or how it sustained its injuries.
It was found near the bridge connecting Danefield Road to Royle Street over the railway line.
Animal rights campaigner Nicky Brookes, from Whatcroft, speculated that it was not an accident.
“A head doesn’t come off by an animal or a car, it’s human intervention,” she said.
“So many awful things happen, I hate it, and I’m afraid I’m not surprised at anything that happens today to animals.”
Anyone with information should contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 424 of 23 June 2012. The information can then be passed on to the RSPCA.
