AN ARMED robber has been jailed indefinitely after he attacked a village postmaster with an axe.

Delroy York, 40, previously of Crockett’s Road, in Birmingham, was found guilty of armed robbery after a two-week trial at Chester Crown Court.

Cheshire Police launched the investigation after the incident that took place in on 18 June 2010 at Comberbach Post Office.

At around 10.50am that morning, a man burst into the Post Office on Senna Lane, armed with an axe, and confronted the 58-year-old postmaster, Stephen Howard.

Demanding cash, the armed man then struck Mr Howard over the head with the axe before smashing his way into the post office counter and stealing a large amount of cash.

Stephen Howard was hospitalised and required extensive medical treatment for head wounds.

Detectives took the appeal for witnesses to BBC′s Crimewatch programme and due to information received from viewers a complex police investigation followed.

Delroy York was subsequently arrested and charged with the robbery.

He has been sentenced to an indefinite public protection sentence which means he will not be eligible to apply for parole for nine years.
