The Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee this summer
SPARKLING plans are afoot to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Northwich town centre this summer.
Vickersway Park and Whalley Road playing field will be transformed into a hive of activity for townsfolk, with the emphasis on keeping costs low for families.
Chris Shaw, Northwich Town Council’s operations manager, said: “We want it to be a family event where it’s affordable for everyone in these times.”
The town council is organising a weekend of fun on Saturday, June 2, and Sunday, June 3.
All facilities at Vickersway Park, known locally as Roker Park, will be free on both days, giving everyone chance to try their skills at crazy golf, tennis and bowling.
For a small charge there willl be a bouncy castle, fairground rides, a barbecue, face painting, stocks and sponge throwing, cup cake decorating and the chance to make badges, key rings and fridge magnets.
A jazz band will also provide atmosphere for party-goers at Vickersway Park.
Whalley Road playing field will hold a Beat the Keeper competition on the Saturday.
The emergency services and Army cadets will also be on hand to chat to visitors. Regular tractor and trailer rides will be held around the town centre, courtesy of Stockley Farm.
Clr Bob Robinson said: “We are determined to put an event on for the Northwich ratepayers and give them something back in these times of austerity.”
Traders in the town centre plan to celebrate the Jubilee with a street party on the Saturday.
Clr Gaynor Sinar, a Cheshire West and Chester councillor and owner of Gaynor’s Curtain Magic, said: “We’re going to have bunting and balloons and trestle tables, then it’s up to individual shops to do what they think is best with the Jubilee in mind.
“We like our heritage and it’s a great opportunity to celebrate being British.” A church service will also be held at St Helen’s Church at 10.30am on the Sunday.
