EXPLOSIVE colour will fill the night skies over Northwich on Saturday as the town holds its annual Bonfire Night celebrations.

Verdin Park will host the event, organised by Northwich Round Table, complete with £4,500 worth of fireworks and an enormous bonfire.

Firms based at Gadbrook Park have donated the fuel for this year’s fire with staff from Weaver Vale Housing Trust visiting businesses to collect unwanted wooden items.

“Many of our staff are from Northwich so it’s nice that we do our bit to support a family event in the local area,”said Phil Curwell, from the trust.

The Guy has been created by children from Charles Darwin Primary School.

Dan Clements, from Northwich Round Table, said: “We’ll be down at Verdin Park for three hours on Saturday morning building it all and then back in the evening – it’s good fun.”

He added: “This event is always very successful and a large amount of funds are generated for good causes.”

Northwich Round Table, for men aged between 18 and 45, organises a number of charity events throughout the year, with 100 per cent of money raised going straight to local charities.

But Kingsmead father-of-three Dan, 40, said more members are urgently needed to make sure this continues.

“We’re down to about six members, which isn’t great,” he said.

“The Rotary Club tries to help us out but a lot of fundraising through the year is getting quite difficult now.

“I think if people realised what we did – the fun side, meeting new people and the business side – a lot of people in Northwich would be attracted to it.

“It’s nice to get involved in the community too, and the bonfire is just one of the things we do.”

The gates at Verdin Park open at 5.30pm on Saturday with the bonfire being lit at 6.30pm and the firework display starting at 7.15pm.

Entrance is £5 for adults and £2 for children.
