CARNIVAL goers basked in a weekend of sunshine as they enjoyed the town’s annual festival.

Visitors to Northwich Carnival were treated to something for everyone during the two-day event, from fairground rides and strongmen to a dog show and car boot sale.

The carnival began with a parade through the town centre on Saturday afternoon and the crowning of this year’s carnival queen, 15-year-old Holly Rowlinson.

She was crowned by Fred Hall, a former member of the carnival committee who has been secretary, chairman and president.

A whole host of entertainment was laid on during the afternoon, including a strongman competition, dance demonstrations and music.

A giant car boot sale and novelty dog show completed the carnival on Sunday.

Barbara Turner, committee secretary, said: “The weather was kind to us and that made a difference.

“There were a lot more lorries and people taking part in the parade this year.

“Holly loved it.

“She’s a lovely girl and was there all day on Sunday in full get-up too – she gave out the prizes for the dog show and pulled out the ticket for the grand draw and did that in all that heat.

“Everyone said they enjoyed it.”

Northwich’s town mayor Alison Gerrard officially opened the carnival.

She said: “It was a good turn-out for the carnival this year – I couldn’t believe how many people were lining the streets for the parade.”

A number of prizes were handed out for floats.

Best Decorated Non-trade Vehicle was won by Little Owls Pre-school, Best Decorated Trade Vehicle was won by Garnett’s Hand Car Wash, Best Walking Group was won by NCD Cheer cheerleaders and Best Individual Form of Transport was won by 1st Winnington Scouts.
