NORTHWICH’S MP is no doubt fretting after making national headlines for apparently playing air guitar during a Commons debate about 11,000 army job cuts.

Graham Evans, MP for Weaver Vale, was sat behind Defence Secretary Liam Fox in the House of Commons during the debate, which meant his every move was caught on camera.

This has struck a discordant note among fellow MPs, with Shadow Defence Minister Michael Dugher condemning his beheviour.

It has been reported in the national press that Mr Dugher said: “Tory MPs were messing about during the statement like the whole thing was a joke."

But Mr Evans, dubbed ‘the air guitar MP’ by The Sun and The Telegraph, has denied practising a tune on a rolled-up Parliamentary paper.

He insists that he was just tapping subconsciously and has hit back at his critics.

“I think this shows Labour’s lack of substance on defence these days if their only line of attack is about the subconcious finger tapping of a backbench MP,” he said.

“I have a long record of taking a passionate interest in the defence issue and supporting our troops.

“I’m an active member of the British Legion and have been a volunteer for the Poppy Appeal for decades.

“Whilst I was in the chamber listening carefully to the Defence Secretary’s statement, the shadow Defence Minister, Michael Dugher, didn’t even bother to show up.”

The debate took place on Wednesday, March 4, with the footage quickly posted on the internet.

Jokers have even put music to it on YouTube and the footage had already had more than 39,800 views.
