A WEAVERHAM student was named runner-up in a Student of the Year competition between three Cheshire colleges.

Mid Cheshire College student Yasmin Atkinson, 19, was given a £400 bursary towards top-up degree fees when she was commended as runner up at the Higher Education Consortium Awards.

Students from Mid Cheshire, South Cheshire and Macclesfield colleges attended the event and nominations were received from course tutors, praising students’ personal development and achievement.

Yasmin is a first-year foundation degree business and management student and has already completed the two-year National Diploma in Business.

Jonathan Gateley, her course tutor, said: “Yasmin has shown excellent determination to succeed. Thus far her efforts have produced distinction-level work and I am confident this level of commitment will continue and see her graduate with flying colours.

“Yasmin has previously won a college award for the student most supportive of the needs of her peers.

“She is always the first to volunteer to attend advice and guidance evenings to offer support, guidance to potential students through the sharing of her own experiences.”

Yasmin hopes to complete her degree at Manchester Metropolitan University.

She said: “The foundation degree has given me the freedom to work as well as study and has also provided me with the confidence to enter into a HR profession.”

Awards were also presented to Mid Cheshire students Laura Smith and Sarah Boniface for their innovation within ICT and the creative industries.
