A WOODLAND is hosting a party in celebration of its 10th birthday.
Acton Bridge is one of 250 villages across the UK which planted trees with The Woodland Trust at the turn of the millennium.
These trees have grown into the Hazel Pear Wood, in Station Road, and members of Acton Bridge Community Association, the parish council and the WI have come together to mark the 10-year milestone.
Jane Evans, chairman of the association, said: “There will be something for all the family to enjoy.
“More than 120 people from the village took part in the original planting of hundreds of native tree ‘whips’ in what was to become the Hazel Pear Wood on Station Road – we hope lots will now come and see the difference that 10 years’ growth can make.”
The wood contains a merestone, a large ice age boulder under which pupils from Crowton School buried a time capsule in October 2001.
Their comments on the day can still be found on the Acton Bridge website at actonbridge.org.
Activities will take place from noon to 4pm, and include a free nature trail and quiz in the wood and a display of birds of prey.
Also taking place is a demonstration of woodturning by the Cheshire Guild of Woodturners, including a discussion of woodturning techniques and equipment, examples of work produced by members and a display of native and exotic timbers.
There will also be a farm shop at The Acton Bridge Garden Centre, opposite the wood, and refreshments will be available at The Hazel Pear pub.
