Heidi plans a fun way to help hospital

A WOMAN whose life was saved by The Christie Hospital is holding a fun day on Saturday to ‘give something back’.

Northwich woman Heidi Morter has organised an event at Knights Grange pub, in Winsford, starting at 1pm.

The 41-year-old was diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer in September 2008 – and even started to plan her own funeral.

But then she had pioneering treatment at The Christie and, after she found out she was in remission, decided to do all she could to help the hospital.

Heidi’s fun day will include a host of activities, from a rodeo bull, climbing wall, craft workshops and a puppet show to an owl display and a creepy crawly show, featuring snakes, tarantula, bearded dragons, turtles, geckos, giant African snails, Madagascan hissing cockroaches and a giant millipede. Dogs will not be allowed, because of the live owl show.

Music will be provided by a steel band and pan pipes, and there will be refreshments, fairground rides, stalls and games. Heidi has also planned a 1,000-balloon release, with a £50 prize for the balloon that travels furthest.

The fun will continue into the evening, with live music from The Targets, The Laurels, Scoundrels, Jinx and Wilson Minds.

Heidi said: “Lots of people have helped to make this possible, but a special thank you to Anita Cooksley, from Rudheath Social Club, who constantly helps me to raise money, and my husband Russ who – without his dedication and support – I couldn’t do this, even though I have probably bored him silly going on about this day for the past seven months.

“The day is not only about raising money for The Christie, but about awareness of the fantastic job they do and for everyone to come along and have some fun. Let’s hope the rain stays away!”

There will be a raffle on the day, with plenty of prizes up for grabs, and Barclays is sending four volunteers to help out.

The bank will match fund proceeds, as part of its pound for pound scheme.

Heidi, of Wentworth Close, will also make a donation to St Luke’s Hospice, in memory of Tony Cocker, from Winsford, who passed away there recently.
