A NORTHWICH school has scooped £2,000 thanks to the Guardian and Barclays.

Charles Darwin Primary School, in Castle, collected the most vouchers in a scheme to boost awareness of money issues.

The competition was part of Barclays Money Skills Programme, which aims to take financial knowledge out to the community and teach people, especially youngsters, how to confidently manage their money.

Vouchers were printed in the Guardian every week for five weeks for children, staff and parents to collect.

“Barclays Money Skills is all about improving the financial capability of young people across the UK,” said Rachel Herbinson, Barclays community investment manager for the north west.

“We are pleased so many schools took the opportunity to get involved in our Cash for Schools partnership with the Northwich Guardian.

“I’ve heard some fantastic stories of how schools have encouraged their whole community to support their collection and I’m delighted Charles Darwin Primary School has won the prize for all the hard efforts of pupils and staff.

“In addition to providing funding to schools and charities working with young people to help them increase their money skills, we aim to make a real impact by encouraging our staff to volunteer using their professional skills through this programme.”

Guardian editor Keith Morris said: “It’s really great that we’ve been able to team up with Barclays in this initiative and offer one of our schools some vital cash in these troubled financial times. It is essential children are equipped with the skills they need to manage their money all through their lives.”
