THE schools of Winsford are hoping their beautiful blooms will outshine the rest at this year’s RHS Flower Show.

The town’s primary schools have once again joined forces to create a garden for the show in Tatton, but this year’s promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

The project, led by Oaklands Special School and the Winsford Education Partnership, will see 20 schools – including Overhall, Over St John’s, Greenfields, Willow Wood, Darnhall, Grange, High Street, Wharton and St Joseph’s primary schools – each develop a three-meter by three-meter plot to form one giant garden.

Rather than the traditional back-to-back design that the show is famed for, the gardens will be grouped in fours and made front-to-front with a cottage-like facade separating each one. And all will be designed around a nursery rhyme theme.

Oaklands co-ordinator Kevin Smith said: “The gardens purpose is to bring together young children and school staff on a sociable and fun project, while using the curriculum to help develop children’s’ knowledge of garden construction, design and horticulture.

“It’s going to be double the size it was last time and we are hoping the RHS will judge the gardens as this will bring a great sense of pride for the children.”

Schools from Northwich and Warrington are also invited to join in, with the Russet School in Northwich already on board.

But costs for such an ambitious project can be quite high and the partnership is on the lookout for a sponsor.

Kevin added: “It takes money and man-power but it’s worth it.”
