Cinema enthusiast wants to reopen Regal Cinema

A CINEMA enthusiast hopes he can reopen Northwich’s much-missed Regal.

James Crompton has been involved with the reopening and refurbishment of a 1930s cinema in Stockport for the past 10 years and hopes he can replicate this success with the Regal.

“I think there’s still a market for a cinema in Northwich and I’m looking to open one,” he said.

“It’s mainly thanks to the Plaza in Stockport that I’ve got an interest in cinema and now I want to jump in at the deep end and try to open or reopen one myself.”

James is just 24 years old but said his age should not be a barrier.

“There are not many people my age that know these buildings for what they are,” he said.

“Most people would say ‘the Regal is a dump, demolish it’ but I can see it for what it was.”

The Regal opened in London Road in 1939 and showed films to the populace of Northwich until it closed more than 60 years later, on January 6, 2007.

A number of plans have been suggested for the site as part of Northwich Vision, including apartments or a hotel, but none of these has come to fruition and the building has remained derelict for more than two years.

James, a volunteer projectionist and organist at the Plaza in Stockport, said: “I’m not against any plans that the council might have for the site but during the period where it’s standing doing nothing it could be used for something, even if it’s just the start of a community cinema.

“The condition of the building is only going to get worse. Someone will get hurt or it will burn down if it’s not used.

“The Regal is quite quirky if you can see beyond the dirt.

“It’s quite a remarkable building, especially considering it’s survived all this time.”

James, who lives in Leyland, has visited the cinema and is in touch with owner William Godfrey, whose grandfather Robert built it.

His next step is to investigate the inside of the building.

He hopes that he can reopen the smaller Screen Two to prove that a cinema in Northwich is viable then look for funding for a bigger project.

He said: “I’m interested to hear local views on whether or not people would want to see it open, whether they would like to help and have it as a community effort or whether they would prefer it to be privately run.

“If there’s enough local interest we could set up a friends group and register as a charitable trust.”

He added: “I don’t have the capital to do it but the man who founded Odeon didn’t either.”

I think opening up the cinema again would be a great idea.It would be used by people of all ages, especially the young people. It needs to show the current releases. At the moment,we have to travel to cinemas in Altrincham,Runcorn etc.Get it open ASAP!! :)

The town has not been the same without its cinema. We have to travel to a horrible multiplex in Ellesmere Port, or go to Liverpool or Manchester for decent films. I guarantee my family will visit any cinema in Northwich maqny times a year! Ron Moy.

I have missed the Regal greatly since it closed and can't believe it's been two years already. I was at the last viewing and had a memorable and emotional evening.

It is such a pain having to travel to Crewe or Elesmere Port and an added expense which few of us can afford with the present credit crunch.

I'm not sure what help I could offer other than my enthusiasm and a promise to be a regular patron.

Good luck and keep us updated with your efforts.

I think it is a brilliant idea, everybody i know was shocked and very sad to see it get closed down. ive been goin there since i was a kid and I am now now unable to watch any new releases on the big screen as i would have to travel as far as cheshire oaks, runcorn or crewe etc.
me and my family were all regular cinema goers, therefore i speak on behalf of about 12 regulars.
re-opening the cinema in northwich would be good for people of all ages and therefore extremely worth while.
BRING BACK THE REGAL!!!!!

On tuesday, my father and I were talking about it being a shame that the regal is closed and I said if I won the lottery I would love to buy it, refurb it and open it up again. Then I read the Guardian today and was delighted to read that someone might reopen it.
My children and I used to love going to the cinema on a Saturday afternoon - lets be honest there`s nothing else in Northwich for children to do. You see kids hanging about the streets. It would be fantastic if the Regal was re-opened. Northwich needs more activities for children but re-opening the cinema would be a start, I hope it goes ahead.

Hello, me again,
Just to mention that I am one of very large team of volunteers at the Stockport Plaza; all of whom have an equal part to play in the operation, fund raising and maintenance which has resulted in the reopening and restoration of the Plaza. I do not intend to mirror the Plaza project at the Regal in any way, only to build up a comunity-led group with an aim of reopening it.

Regards,
James.

It would be great to see the Regal twin opened once more, even better if you could see the posters at the bottom of Castle hill again as you drive into town! To succeed it needs to standout from the faceless annoying multiplexes by showing classic and cult films, introducing a film club would be good!

This a brilliant idea, I think most people in Northwich, young and old were sad to see the Regal go. I agree with Paulsbell that showing items such as classic, cult, independant and even local film projects as well as the blockbusters would be a great success and reach a much wider audience.
It would be my pleasure to help out in any way I could.
Good luck, This would really bring something back to Northwich.
