Leftwich couple celebrate 60 years together

A LEFTWICH couple whose relationship survived a period away in the Middle East have been busy celebrating their diamond anniversary.

Stan and Jean Perry, both 82, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, June 25, at their home in London Road, Leftwich.

They tied the knot at Holy Trinity Church in Castle at 2pm in 1949.

And like so many other couples of their generations they first met while dancing at Winnington Rec in 1943.

They did admit though that they didn’t do much dancing after their first meet.

They were engaged soon after but had to wait to tie the knot as Stan went to experience life in the Middle East.

Stan said: “I went in the Army in 1944 and I was only 17 at the time. I wasn’t interested in being a peace-time soldier though.

“I saw an advert for the Palestine Police and I ended up going over there for just over three years, before coming back in 1948.”

After arriving back in the country Stan worked at ICI, retiring from the company in 1982 after serving as a foreman. Joan was employed as a laundry worker and later went to work in a butcher’s shop, close to where the couple now live. They have one son, Andrew, 47, who lives in Rudheath with wife Karen and their children Bradley, 16, and Stephanie, 13.

Holiday’s are top of the agenda for the Perry’s, with their favourite destinations including Greece and the former Yugoslavia.

Joan added: “We wonder where the time has gone because it has just flown by.

“No-one is perfect all the time and we do have our disagreements but we have had a good life together.

“We have been away every year, apart from once when we couldn’t decide on where to go.

“Stan is a bit fussy with his food but other than that he is easy to live with, he likes his good food.”

A family celebration is taking place in July at the Woodpecker on London Road to celebrate the couple’s achievement.
